Emily Kappel | Applied & Computational Mathematics – Actuarial Science, Managerial Accounting | She/Her

Are you enthusiastic about enhancing the quality of student life on campus, ensuring the student needs are met, and transforming the image of Western? My name is Emily Kappel, and I am committed to doing just that if elected as your next Student Government President. As someone who has been highly involved within the Western community, I have personally witnessed the challenges that have impeded Western and its students from achieving their full potential. Not only have I identified these areas for improvement, but I have proactively taken the initiative to collaborate with fellow SGA members, students, and administrators to overcome them. I have undertaken the roles of SGA Food Pantry Cofounder & Coordinator as well as former Philanthropy Chair, dedicating myself tirelessly to ensure that students’ essential needs are met, including food needs, school supplies, toiletries, and winter clothing. As President, I am dedicated to continuing to remove the barriers so many of our students face so that they might prioritize their academics. I have also served as a member of the Student Relations Committee, Grad Class Chair, and SGA Representative on the Alumni Board. In these positions, I have worked diligently to cultivate relationships within the University community and provide the best student-life experience possible. In my capacity as the Senator for Ancell, I have closely collaborated with Dean Hayajneh to address any concerns raised by Ancell students, such as the cost of online learning platforms, and propose areas for improvement such as ensuring the accuracy and consistency of course information, so that students can graduate on time. In order to advocate for the best interests of students’ education, I testified on behalf of WCSU at the CT State Appropriations Committee, emphasizing the critical need for funding at Western and highlighting the incredible achievements of our students. Moreover, on the Interim Provost Search Committee, I represented the voice of students to advocate for the selection of the most qualified candidate who shares the commitment to shared governance that our students deserve. I have fought for this school, and I will never stop fighting alongside all of you for this University, for each and every one of you. Beyond my involvement in the Student Government Association, I have actively pursued roles that have enabled me to have a positive impact on various areas of campus life. As a Math Clinic Tutor and former Math Emporium TA, I have shared my knowledge to uplift others. Moreover, I have been involved in numerous community service activities and have taken on additional leadership responsibilities, serving as both the Executive Vice President and Vice President of Finance for Alpha Delta Pi. I firmly believe that these experiences in servant leadership, combined with my strong work ethic, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to improving student life, make me an ideal candidate for the role. I am excited to embrace the responsibilities of this significant leadership position, and dedicate myself to fulfilling your social, academic, and human needs. I hope to also increase membership amongst underrepresented majors, hometowns, and student athletes. In order to accomplish these goals, I plan to leverage the synergies and strengths of Western and its students to maximize this University’s potential. I kindly ask for your support in the upcoming Student Government election and sincerely thank you for your time and consideration.
