This page is designed to provide as much information upfront as possible so meetings (and the process of arranging meetings) are satisfactory to all. Some might misconstrue from this page that I am disinterested in meeting students, but in reality, I meet students quite often both during and outside designated office hours.

Absolutely no meetings 30 minutes before any of my classes begin. No meeting begins within 10-15 minutes before the end of office hours. I often need to leave immediately after end of office hours for activities such as teaching, meeting, and catching a shuttle.

Students waiting to meet me are free to negotiate the meeting order among themselves without my involvement. However, my current students get priority, and I might need to reorder meetings based on urgency, sensitivity, and other matters. If you feel you need to meet me before others, please be prepared to offer a justification, and do so simply and respectfully.

If I know of an exception to office hours, I post them to the page where office hours are shown. However, I may be unable to post an exception if I do not get sufficient advance notice of it. Please check the exceptions before planning to meet me.

Unless an exception is posted, or an emergency has arisen, I am likely to be in my office during designated hours. If I am not in my office when expected, please wait for a few minutes in case I am in the copy room or the bathroom. If I do not show within 10-15 minutes of your arrival, an emergency has likely kept me from being in my office.

E-mail me a request if you need to meet outside designated hours. I cannot guarantee I will be available when you need me to be, but I will try accommodating. Please consult my typical weekly schedule before asking for a specific time. Please be aware that my work responsibilities include several tasks that do not appear on the calendar. In short, be prepared to receive a reply that I am unavailable at the exact time you seek.

My typical weekly schedule is available in the “General” folder where all my courseware is stored. As the calendar shows, most slots are filled ahead of time and it is very hard to move them. If a day looks fully open on the calendar, it is likely my day to exclusively participate in activities such as meetings, grading, and making slides. That said, I do spend quite a bit of time outside office hours with students, mostly when students stop by and just ask if I am available.

Please do not take personally my inability to meet when you wish to. If I am unable to meet outside office hours, it is because I genuinely have other pressing matters that need attending.

Like many, I too like to receive few(er) mails and avoid playing mail tag just to coordinate a meeting. Thus, I provide a lot of information on this site and in my courseware so all communication and meetings are productive. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
