Our lab studies “photochemistry” — i.e. the interaction of molecules with ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light. When a molecule absorbs light in this range, the molecule gains a considerable amount of energy, and many interesting processes can result. For instance: molecules can “glow” (aka fluorescence/phosphorescence), they can break apart to form new “photoproducts” (aka photolysis), or they can transfer energy to other molecules via collisions (aka photosensitization). Our group studies a wide variety of these phenomena in several applied contexts.
