I am Professor Emeritus of English at Western Connecticut State University.\u00a0My teaching and research interests have included 19th<\/sup> Century English Literature; comparative literature and transcultural adaptation; the English novel; American short fiction; literary translation; and creative writing. I have taught many courses in these areas at both graduate and undergraduate levels throughout my career.<\/p>\n

My research has been published in peer reviewed journals (A&HCI and MLA indexed) such as The Cambridge Quarterly<\/a><\/em>, Comparative Drama<\/a><\/em>, Classical Receptions Journal<\/a><\/em>, International Theatre Research<\/em><\/a>, The Explicator<\/a><\/em>, The Ibsen Review<\/a><\/em>, The Eugene O\u2019Neill Review<\/em><\/a>, The Hardy Review<\/a><\/em>, and Literature Compass<\/a><\/em>. The latest is a commissioned chapter for The Edinburgh Companion to Modernism in Contemporary Theatre<\/em><\/span> (Edinburgh University Press, 2023).<\/p>\n

My scholarly books include Culture, History, and the Reception of Tennessee Williams in China<\/em><\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), Adapting Western Classics for the Chinese Stage<\/em><\/a> (Routledge, 2018), The Bronte Sisters in Other Wor(l)ds<\/em><\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and Western Literature in China and the Translation of a Nation<\/em><\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).<\/p>\n

My latest novel is\u00a0Becoming Monkey King: The Untold Story<\/em><\/a> (2025), the perilous epic Journey to the West <\/em>told for the first time in Monkey’s own witty, whimsical, and (self)righteous voice. It is the first of a 4-novel project I have been working on:\u00a0 To reimagine\/retell for readers in the 21st century the four greatest classic Chinese novels: Journey to the West<\/em>, Romance of the Three Kingdoms<\/em>, Dream of the Red Chamber<\/em>, and Band of Brothers of the Marsh<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Other book-length creative endeavors include Twin-Sun River: An American POW in Chin<\/a><\/em>a<\/em> (2011); Purple Mountain: A Story of the Rape of Nanking<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2010, featured at Shepherd Best Books,<\/a> titled When the Purple Mountain Burns: A Novel<\/a><\/em> when first published in 2005); and Red Guard Fantasies and Other Stories<\/a><\/em> (2007). My screenplay Purple Mountain<\/a><\/em> has been optioned for production and my play Twin-Sun River: An American POW in China<\/em> was staged by the prestigious Shanghai Theater Academy (2009).<\/p>\n

My short stories, creative essays, and other short works have appeared in Feminist Studies<\/em><\/a>, AMBIT<\/em>, the Connecticut Review<\/em>, Rain Flower<\/em>, Shanghai Theatre<\/em><\/a>, and many other places.<\/p>\n

Among my literary translations are two Thomas Hardy novels: A Pair of Blue Eyes<\/a><\/em> (1994) and <\/em>The Well-Beloved<\/a><\/em> (1998), <\/em>and Pearl Jacket: Flash Fiction from Contemporary China<\/a><\/em> (2008). Another Hardy-themed book I coauthored is Tragic Harmony: Essays on Thomas Hardy\u2019s Fiction and Poetry<\/a><\/em> (2001).<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n

I served as chair of the Department of English at Western Connecticut State University (2017-2022) and coordinator of the MA in English program (2007-2015). I am recipient of CSU Board of Trustees Research Award<\/a> (2007), Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of Liberal Arts, Yangzhou University<\/a> (2017–present), and adjunct professor of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University<\/a> (2024–). I am serving on the Editorial Board of The Thomas Hardy Journal<\/em> and The<\/em> Hardy Society Journal<\/em> (2018–present).
