The latest is a commissioned chapter for <span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><em>The Edinburgh Companion to Modernism in Contemporary Theatre<\/em><\/span> (Edinburgh University Press, 2023).<\/p>\n<p>My scholarly books include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Culture-Reception-Tennessee-Williams-Literature\/dp\/3031169336\"><em>Culture, History, and the Reception of Tennessee Williams in China<\/em><\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Adapting-Western-Classics-for-the-Chinese-Stage\/Qi\/p\/book\/9781138214330\"><em>Adapting Western Classics for the Chinese Stage<\/em><\/a> (Routledge, 2018),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/us\/book\/9781137405142\"><em> The Bronte Sisters in Other Wor(l)ds<\/em><\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/us\/book\/9780230120877\"><em>Western Literature in China and the Translation of a Nation<\/em><\/a> (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>My latest novel is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Becoming-Monkey-King-Untold-Story\/dp\/1632880512\/ref=monarch_sidesheet_title\"><em>Becoming Monkey King: The Untold Story<\/em><\/a> (2025), the perilous epic <em>Journey to the West <\/em>told for the first time in Monkey&#8217;s own witty, whimsical, and (self)righteous voice. It is the first of a 4-novel project I have been working on:\u00a0 To reimagine\/retell for readers in the 21st century the four greatest classic Chinese novels: <em>Journey to the West<\/em>, <em>Romance of the Three Kingdoms<\/em>, <em>Dream of the Red Chamber<\/em>, and <em>Band of Brothers of the Marsh<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Other book-length creative endeavors include <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Twin-Sun-River-American-POW-China\/dp\/0983875308\">Twin-Sun River: An American POW in Chin<\/a><\/em><em>a<\/em> (2011); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Purple-Mountain-Story-Rape-Nanking\/dp\/145287316X\"><em>Purple Mountain: A Story of the Rape of Nanking<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2010, featured at <a href=\"https:\/\/shepherd.com\/best-books\/pacific-theater-ww2\">Shepherd Best Books,<\/a> titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/When-Purple-Mountain-Burns-Novel\/dp\/1592650414\">When the Purple Mountain Burns: A Novel<\/a><\/em> when first published in 2005); and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Red-Guard-Fantasies-Other-Stories\/dp\/1592650686\">Red Guard Fantasies and Other Stories<\/a><\/em> (2007). My screenplay <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Purple-Mountain-Story-Rape-Nanking-ebook\/dp\/B003NHRC44\/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Purple+Mountain%2C+shouhua+qi&amp;qid=1552412394&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-2-spell\">Purple Mountain<\/a><\/em> has been optioned for production and my play <em>Twin-Sun River: An American POW in China<\/em> was staged by the prestigious Shanghai Theater Academy (2009).<\/p>\n<p>My short stories, creative essays, and other short works have appeared in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministstudies.org\/issues\/vol-30-39\/31-2.html\"><em>Feminist Studies<\/em><\/a>, <em>AMBIT<\/em>,<em> the Connecticut Review<\/em>, <em>Rain Flower<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xueshu.com\/shxj\/201604\/17777012.html\"><em>Shanghai Theatre<\/em><\/a>, and many other places.<\/p>\n<p>Among my literary translations are two Thomas Hardy novels: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/book.douban.com\/subject\/4098086\/\">A Pair of Blue Eyes<\/a><\/em> (1994)<em> and <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/book.douban.com\/works\/1049852\">The Well-Beloved<\/a><\/em> (1998)<em>, <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pearl-Jacket-Other-Stories-Contemporary-ebook\/dp\/B0046A9QWI\">Pearl Jacket: Flash Fiction from Contemporary China<\/a><\/em> (2008). Another Hardy-themed book I coauthored is <em><a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/item\/\u56de\u5e94\u60b2\u5267\u7f2a\u65af\u7684\u547c\u5524\/12160492?fr=aladdin\">Tragic Harmony: Essays on Thomas Hardy\u2019s Fiction and Poetry<\/a><\/em> (2001)<em>.<\/em><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>I served as chair of the Department of English at Western Connecticut State University (2017-2022) and coordinator of the MA in English program (2007-2015). I am recipient of <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ct.edu\/files\/csus-resolutions\/07-033.pdf\">CSU Board of Trustees Research Award<\/a> (2007), <a href=\"http:\/\/wxy.yzu.edu.cn\/art\/2018\/5\/31\/art_2590_600976.html\">Distinguished Visiting Professor at the College of Liberal Arts, Yangzhou University<\/a> (2017&#8211;present), and adjunct professor of English and Comparative Literature at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdsu.edu\/\">San Diego State University<\/a> (2024&#8211;). I am serving on the Editorial Board of <em>The Thomas Hardy Journal<\/em> and <em>The<\/em> <em>Hardy Society Journal<\/em> (2018&#8211;present).
