Students should check Banner to find\/confirm their advisor details.<\/p>\n<p>Please carefully <strong>read and follow the information in this page<\/strong>. As much as I want to, I am <strong>unable to reply to individual mails<\/strong> seeking information already provided here (or is elsewhere on the university site), or information that is reasonably obtained in a meeting.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>General<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No appointments<\/strong> for advising. <strong>Advising is during <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wcsu.edu\/murthys\/\">office hours<\/a> and certain hours set aside just for advising<\/strong> (see below). Please do <strong>not<\/strong> send a mail asking when we can meet. Hardship exceptions are made.<\/li>\n<li>PIN only after advising. <strong>No advising or PIN by mail or phone<\/strong>. Please do <strong>not<\/strong> ask to just get your PIN without advising: The purpose of advising is &#8220;advising&#8221;; not PIN issuance.<\/li>\n<li>Advising only for CS department&#8217;s majors. Students <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/aac\/how-do-i-declare-my-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changing majors<\/a> should meet the chair of their next\/new department. Students without a declared major should visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/aac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advisement Center<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Advising only for students who arrive <strong>fully<\/strong> prepared. <strong>See the list below on information to bring<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Advising means advising. Do not expect to look up schedules and find courses\/sections during the meeting. Do not expect the advisor to work out your schedule.<\/li>\n<li>Set aside 15-20 minutes for advising. Do not rush the advisor, because the advisor is expected to update certain documents before\/during\/after each advising session.<\/li>\n<li>First come, first serve. Multiple advisees waiting should resolve priorities among themselves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check for holds<\/strong>. Meet the registrar and figure out how to clear holds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Information to bring<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>All information should be on paper<\/strong>. <strong>No advising without all the information listed here<\/strong>. (Bringing all the information listed leads to a productive meeting.)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>DegreeWorks audit sheet<\/strong> <strong>printed in color<\/strong>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/registrar\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/99\/2018\/03\/Degree-Works-Help-Manual-Student-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DegreeWorks For Students\u00a0manual<\/a> describes how to view and print the audit sheet.<\/li>\n<li>A summary of where you are in the program. You should be prepared to state the summary and share academic concerns in the meeting.<\/li>\n<li>Mid-term grades for the current semester. You should know the <strong>course number, title, instructor name, and the mid-term grade for all your current courses<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>List of 5-8 courses to sign up with <strong>specific sections<\/strong> <strong>and the reason<\/strong> you are interested in those courses\/sections<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Do not list exactly 3 or 4 courses, because sections may be closed, or you may not meet prerequisites. See the notes below on choosing courses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Completed schedule grid showing planned courses:\u00a0<\/strong>Fill the grid with course number and section\u00a0you wish to take (for example, CS170-01). If you have multiple options, <strong>prepare a grid for each schedule combination<\/strong>. Use an <a href=\"https:\/\/freecollegeschedulemaker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online schedule maker<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wcsu.edu\/murthys\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/04\/ScheduleGrid.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this\u00a0schedule grid<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Optional list of questions to ask the advisor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Choosing courses and sections<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consult the DegreeWorks audit sheet to determine the courses you need.<\/li>\n<li>Consult <a href=\"http:\/\/bannerweb.wcsu.edu\/openclose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenClose<\/a> to determine what courses are offered. Also <strong>see which sections of the course are still open<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check the prerequisites<\/strong> for each course and make sure you meet them. Also see if there are any constraints on sections. For example, a section may be set aside only for certain majors.<\/li>\n<li>To meet general-education requirements, <strong>check the competencies each section satisfies<\/strong>. It is possible only some sections of a course satisfy a competency.<\/li>\n<li>Choose courses based on program requirements. It is nice if those courses also coincide with your interests, but <strong>advising is primarily concerned with program requirements<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose sections that give you <strong>at least 30 minutes between classes on different campuses<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Add yourself to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcsu.edu\/registrar\/waitlist-registration-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">waitlist<\/a> if class is full, instead of mailing the instructor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Advising hours (Fall 2019)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Aside from <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wcsu.edu\/murthys\/\">office hours<\/a> (which are shared with other students), I provide advising at the <strong>following\u00a0 additional times<\/strong>.
