Math Emporium Tutor Job Description:

The Math Emporium (http://www.wcsu.edu/math/Emporium/math_emporium_main_page.htm) is an interactive computer-equipped tutorial learning center, located in Higgins Annex 105, that enables a new way of teaching/learning the remedial math courses MAT 100 and 100P ONLY. It combines software-based learning, some traditional lecture instruction, and one-on-one tutoring, with faculty and teaching assistants available to assist students.

Math Emporium Teaching assistants (TAs) are hired to interact with students on an one-to-one basis and answer any and all types of questions related to the course material.

The specific responsibilities include circulating among the students in the Emporium helping any student in whether they ask for help, or the TA observes that they are struggling. An important part of the job is looking for subtle signals that inform the TA that a student is struggling, to catch those who are reluctant to ask for help and give them assistance and support as well.

The TAs are also expected to:

  1. Remind students to maintain quiet and encourage them to follow the rules, while discipline is ultimately the responsibility of a faculty member to enforce.
  2. Be more authoritative if their shift is during one of the times when a class is not meeting, making sure to maintain a quiet work environment with no food, drink, or cell phone use.

The main task remains academic support at all times. If assigned a time when no faculty is present, the TA must commit to remaining during that entire time to supervise the lab.

The pay is $12/hour
